Spotlight Industry Project: Cooling off at Harley-Davidson

Note: Please see the photos at the end of this case study!

PALM SPRINGS, CA—Harley-Davidson is esteemed as one of America’s hot brands. But when one of their major California showrooms got a little too hot, they called on APOC for a little relief.

As a high-profile retail brand in an anchor location, and in a business where customers and enthusiasts like to linger in the showroom before making purchase decisions, comfort is a critical factor in the business success of Palm Spring's Harley-Davidson dealership.

So through their roofing contractor, Harley-Davidson identified that their hot showroom problems and overtaxed HVAC system were tied to a roof in poor condition, according to John Eminhizer, owner of Inland Pacific Roofing Company.

Eminhizer contacted APOC to determine if their location would be a candidate for a cool roof restoration.

“Essentially, due to traffic on the roof, the BUR mineral cap sheet had several areas that were essentially bare asphalt. That created a lot of heat gain in the building,” said John Athanasion, technical sales manager for APOC.

Athanasion proposed a system including an initial layer of waterproofing protection, then a white polyester reinforcing fabric and white cool roof coating. Emulsion and a polyester fabric were used to create the waterproofing part of the system. Flashings and other roof details were patched and sealed with Neoprene Rubber Flashing Cement, and the system was topped with an Elastomeric grey base coat primer with Elastomeric white as the topcoat.

APOC also provided the system specification to ensure good communication with contractors and worked with applicators to ensure proper application at each step.

The results? Measured in motorcycle terms, “street credibility” is the evidence of real performance where it counts. APOC’s solution delivered instant “street credible” results with the Bar and Shield dealer on this project: Harley-Davidson was thrilled with the result, especially the cooling provided by cool roof elastomeric coatings. “The tenants on this project are happy with the major temperature change,” noted Mr. Eminhizer. That’s street cred.
